[January 24, 2013] Journal 5
The professor asked to describe and reflect on my home language, and also explore how this language shapes my identity. After writing, we shared our own narratives with classmates. This activity made me look relation between language and identity. I had never tried to think about the connection between my first language, Korean and my identity. However, this class gave a new realization of me. After I came to the U.S, I sometimes heard from Americans I was too be polite. At that time, I had no idea about why I tried to be polite toward the old in the U.S. but I became to acknowledge the reason was the huge influence of my mother tongue.
